SOUTHERN TIER CIDER WORKS™ product innovation and branding
Small Town. Local Orchard. Big flavor. Located in upstate New York, Southern Tier Brewing Co.® is surrounded by an abundance of neighboring apple orchards, so it was only natural for the brewery to expand into Hard Ciders – and that’s exactly what they did. To help bring this to life, we needed to start with the brand. Consumers were familiar with the current Southern Tier - instantly recognizing it as a brand they trusted. Key equity elements were maintained from the beer line while reinforcing the “Hard Cider” communication and differentiating from the rest of the Southern Tier portfolio.
It all about the taste. When it came to the packaging of each unique flavor, apple accents and orchard storytelling was brought to life through the white-wash crate and upstate New York orchard imagery. The natural color palette was used to highlight the unique flavor profiles on both the can as well as the grab-n-go 6-pack. To better communicate the drinking experience, a simple yet effective taste meter was featured to rate the dry/sweetness of each flavor. The result is a comprehensive Hard Cider experience that effectively communicates the details of each product.

(cider) a day. With the 12ct Variety Pack, consumers are able to experience the core flavors plus a limited time flavor. The design of this package maintained the crate background and large Southern Tier logo, yet also featured the four cans as heroes to highlight the flavors included. Due to unknown shelving situations, all panels on all cartons were primary display panels that included branding, flavor and important product information. So, no matter how it sits on shelf, you will know it is the Southern Tier cider you love.
